Nancy Jo Shaw has been richly immersed in children’s literature her entire life. She grew up in South Dakota with teacher parents and grandparents that read to her daily and told her many stories about life on the prairie. Nancy decided to share her love of reading and storytelling first to her own three sons, then with her elementary students, and now with her grandson, Sebastian.

Happily retired from teaching first grade, she resides in Mendota Heights, Minnesota with her husband, two tabby cats, and a tiny Chihuahua named Pixie. A graduate from the University of South Dakota, she received her master’s degree from Lesley University in Integrated Teaching through the Creative Arts. Nancy still tutors students at a neighborhood elementary school and is actively involved with youth programs and music at her Methodist church.

She loves writing books that kids will enjoy and encourages them to read, write, and share their stories, too.

Award-winning author Nancy Jo Shaw of Mendota Heights, Minnesota, delights us with yet another whimsical tale . . . this time about a gorilla named Casey.  Raising her family and teaching school in the Como Park neighborhood of St. Paul, Minnesota, she frequently visited the zoo with her three sons and students from Chelsea Heights Elementary.  Now a retired teacher and proud grandmother, she still enjoys visiting Como Park Zoo and Conservatory where she and her husband belong to Como Friends.  “I’ve been working on this gorilla story ever since the day Casey escaped way back in 1994,” she says, “and now twenty years later I’ve finished it.”

The book is being sold at Como Park Zoo’s Garden Safari Gift Shop in St. Paul, MN. and ten percent of all proceeds are being donated by Ms. Shaw back to Gorilla Forest to help gorillas.
